Temple is situated on the top of Kinnaur peak, Recong Peo. Recong Peo is the city where you can reach and visit the temple. The temple is also known for its rich wooden architecture and silver plated doors. It is believed that Chandika was the eldest daughter of the demon devta Banaasur, who ruled Kinnaur. The story about the temple is the demon Devata Banasur had 18 sons and daughters. Shri Chandika Devi was eldest daughter among all. The local people hold the goddess in great approval and also consider Shri Chandika Devi to be one of the most powerful goddess.
According to the legend, Chandika killed the demon with the help of a cunning female relative and her brother Chagaon Maheshwar.
Now in the morning the pujaries bring water from the nearby spring and worship goddess by burning incense, while musical instruments are played by Domangs.
There is a fresh water spring reservior near the temple you can see the beautiful colored fishes who grew naturally they are treated as god by villagers for the mysterious reason that they keep surviving freezing icy water beneath the 8-10 ft of snow for 3-4 months.
