Hanol is a small Village/hamlet in Chakrata Tehsil in Dehradun District of Uttarakhand State, India. It comes under Hanol Panchayath. It is located 57 KM towards North from District head quarters Dehradun. 58 KM from State capital Dehradun Hanol Pin code is 248199 and postal head office is Tuini . The Mahasu Devata temple in Hanol lies at the border of Western Uttarakhand and Himalachal Pradesh. A very remote location not frequented by tourists but held is very high regards by local Jaunsar-Bawar hill people. Lore has it that the hills, at an ancient time, were terrorized by a demon until a pious man pleaded with the gods, who incarnated as his sons and defeated the demon. The eldest among the sons was Mahasu, some say a form of Lord Shiva. The road from the Uttarakhand side passes through some heavy landslide affected stretches until it reaches the last habitation known as the Tuni bazaar, a small nondescript junction by the river Tons. The actual temple is in a small grassy clearing below the main road, surrounded by hills and a crystal-clear water body nearby. The orange sunlight from beyond the hills specially during dawn and dusk, reflecting ontu the water and the temple, create a spectacularly surreal environment. The main sanctum, with a small door guarding the entrance, remains closed most of the time. Inside the temple compound there are two extremely heavy round-shaped stones lying on the grass. It is believed that only a person with the clearest heart will be able to lift those stones without breaking a sweat. The priests however say they havenâ??t seen anyone who has been able to do so yet. In anycase the whole area has a magical beauty such that the mind automatically gets pulled towards things ethereal and Divine. It is believed, again by locally, that the Emperor Akbar used to visit this temple often.
